Truck height restrictions cause major traffic delays near Rotterdam

Traffic in the Rotterdam region faced significant disruptions after oversized trucks triggered height-restriction systems at three different tunnels. The incidents occurred at the Drechttunnel, the Noordtunnel, and the Heinenoordtunnel.

At the Drechttunnel on the A16, delays reached up to one hour, with traffic backing up as far as Breda. The Noordtunnel on the A15 experienced 40-minute delays, while the Heinenoordtunnel on the A29 saw approximately 10 minutes of disruption.

These closures are part of a safety protocol where sensors detect vehicles exceeding 4 meters in height, triggering red lights and barriers to prevent structural damage. Authorities noted that as bridges in the region undergo frequent closures, more trucks are utilizing tunnel routes, leading to an increase in height-related alerts and subsequent traffic congestion.
