Constanța truck crash injures dozens, driver blamed on severe hypoglycemia
On 8 June a 49‑year‑old truck driver from Oradea lost control of his tractor‑trailer on Dispensarului Street in Constanța, Romania. Investigators say a severe hypoglycaemic episode, linked to the driver’s diabetes, may have caused the loss of control. The vehicle struck multiple parked and moving cars, a bus, a pole, a tree and a traffic island, damaging at least ten vehicles.
Two victims – an adult and a minor – were taken to hospital for treatment. Police confirmed the driver tested negative for alcohol and illegal substances and opened a criminal investigation into the cause of the crash. Video footage later showed a local police officer using tear‑gas spray and striking the driver while attempting to immobilise the truck, sparking public outcry and an internal review of the police response.
The incident has prompted discussions about medical fitness to drive and police conduct, with authorities continuing investigations into both the medical condition of the driver and the alleged excessive use of force by officers.
