Portugal truckers protest soaring fuel prices

Hundreds of truck drivers and commuters in Portugal staged protests on Friday to voice opposition to soaring fuel costs. In a major demonstration, a convoy of between 400 and 500 heavy vehicles conducted a slow-speed march along the A1, A41, and A42 motorways, traveling approximately 150 kilometers from Paredes to Coimbra.

Protesters are demanding that independent drivers and small businesses be granted access to the same petroleum tax refunds currently available to larger freight and passenger transport companies. In Lisbon, commuters staged a separate protest on the April 25 Bridge, using car horns to demand the reinstatement of remote working policies, the suspension of highway tolls, and the removal of VAT on fuel. They also called for the resignation of Environment Minister Maria Graça Carvalho following her suggestions that citizens drive more slowly to conserve fuel.

Fuel prices in Portugal have reached record highs, with diesel exceeding 2 euros per litre and an overall 24% year-on-year increase in August. The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, acknowledged that the trucking industry has been overlooked in previous government mitigation efforts and has scheduled a meeting with industry representatives for the following Monday.
