Trucker Path data reveals US states with worst truck parking shortages

A shortage of parking spots for trucks is creating safety and security problems for freight carriers across the United States. Under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules, commercial drivers must stop for rest breaks, but many struggle to find formal parking and resort to roadside stops.

Trucker Path, a smartphone app used by more than one million drivers, analyzed logged data to rank states by availability of public and private truck parking. The states with the least public parking are Maryland, Tennessee, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey, while the least private parking are Massachusetts, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut and North Carolina. Conversely, Montana, Nevada, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Michigan have the most public parking, and Alaska, North Dakota, Montana, South Dakota and Nevada lead in private parking availability.
