Truckers blockade Assam-Mizoram border over harassment allegations

Tensions have escalated at the Assam-Mizoram border in the Lailapur area of Cachar district as a blockade by over 100 truck drivers entered its third day. The protesters are demanding permanent safety measures to prevent what they describe as recurring harassment, hostility, and intimidation faced by commercial vehicle operators crossing into Mizoram.

Attempts by the Cachar district administration to clear the highway and restore traffic on Tuesday met with resistance from the drivers, who parked heavy vehicles across the road to maintain the blockade. The truckers have stated they will not allow goods consignments to pass until the governments of Assam and Mizoram implement concrete mechanisms to ensure driver security.

The standoff has left numerous goods-laden trucks stranded, disrupting the movement of essential supplies between the two states. Local police and district officials have been deployed to the area to monitor the situation and attempt to resolve the dispute through discussions.
