Trucking industry faces rising diesel repair and maintenance costs

Independent truck owners and fleet operators are facing significant financial pressure due to rising diesel truck repair and maintenance costs. According to the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) 2026 Analysis of the Operational Costs of Trucking, the industry-average cost to operate a truck in 2025 increased by 3.4% compared to 2024. Notably, repair and maintenance costs saw an 8.6% increase, the second-largest gain after tolls.

Several factors are driving these rising expenses, including inflation, supply chain disruptions, higher parts prices, and increasing labor costs. Additionally, the growing complexity of modern equipment and the high cost of professional-grade diagnostic tools present challenges for independent repair shops that lack full access to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) information.

To mitigate these costs and avoid vehicle downtime, safety organizations and manufacturers recommend strict preventive maintenance schedules for owner-operators.
