Truffle festivals in Italy face scarcity amid climate concerns

Recent truffle festivals in Italy have highlighted both the cultural importance of the precious fungus and the growing challenges facing its production. In Pergola, the 29th International White Truffle Fair attracted approximately 45,000 visitors, celebrating the Tuber magnatum pico through exhibitions, tastings, and appearances by notable figures such as chef Bruno Barbieri.

However, the 59th Sagra del Tartufo in Dovadola underscored a difficult season for producers. The winning truffle weighed only 153 grams, significantly less than previous years, and prices remained high, reaching up to 500 euros per 100 grams for white varieties. Experts and local producers attribute the scarcity and smaller size of the truffles to environmental factors, including extreme summer heat, drought, and the impact of the May 2023 floods, which washed away essential soil layers.
