Trujillo municipality implements flood prevention measures

The Trujillo Provincial Municipality (MPT) is preparing to install 16 new 'buzonetas'—underground concrete pits designed to capture rainwater—to mitigate flooding risks caused by intense rains associated with the El Niño phenomenon.

These new structures will bring the city's total to 46 collection points. The project aims to address 57 critical points identified in the 2026 Action Plan for Intense Rains and Associated Hazards, which includes areas with low, moderate, and high risk levels. Targeted sectors for these installations include San Judas Tadeo, Los Jardines, Vista Hermosa, Villa de Contadores II, Ascomapaat, Los Naranjos, El Palomar, Pesqueda, and Santa Sofía.

According to Richard Asmad Benites, manager of Disaster Risk Management, the municipality is currently managing the budget for these structures. Previous installations proved effective during March rains; for instance, water evacuation on Jesús de Nazareth Avenue was reduced from over eight hours to approximately two and a half hours. The system utilizes motor pumps to transfer captured water from the pits to cisterns or tanks.
