Peru faces surge in organized crime, extortion, and drug trafficking
Peru is experiencing a significant escalation in organized crime, characterized by widespread extortion, drug trafficking, and targeted violence against public officials. In Trujillo, investigations have revealed that several private security companies were founded by individuals linked to criminal gangs, including those involved in extortion and illegal weapons possession.
In the northern region, the mayor-elect of Huanchaco, Jordan Piminchumo Mendez, has publicly denounced extortion attempts where criminals demanded large monthly payments under threat of death. Similarly, in Piura, criminal groups are reportedly targeting newly elected mayors to influence municipal decisions and public works.
Law enforcement operations have yielded multiple arrests across the country. In Chincha, police captured suspects allegedly involved in the murder of a businesswoman. In Pisco, a major operation dismantled the “Las Baybis de San Andrés” gang, resulting in the seizure of cocaine, ammunition, and explosives. Additionally, in Trujillo, police intercepted a drug micro-trafficking ring that included a municipal inspector.
In Arequipa, authorities arrested a suspect linked to a series of arson attacks against vehicles and a restaurant, with investigations ongoing to determine if the motive was extortion.
