Trump Accounts program for U.S. newborns prompts Norway's KrF to propose similar scheme

The U.S. Treasury will subsidise a $1,000 "Trump Account" for each child born between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2028. The funds are placed in an American‑stock index fund and cannot be accessed until the child turns 18, though parents may add up to $5,000 per year. Senator Ted Cruz described the plan as a way to make “all children and all Americans capitalists.”

Norway's Christian Democratic Party (KrF) has floated a comparable idea, dubbed “Ulstein‑kontoer,” arguing that a child‑focused savings account could help raise the country's low fertility rate of 1.48 children per woman. KrF finance spokesperson Jørgen Kristiansen said, “Min umiddelbare tanke er at dette høres klokt ut,” while noting uncertainty about the measure’s impact on birth rates.
