Trump Accounts program provides investment funds for 70 million children
The Trump Accounts program has established investment accounts for approximately 70 million children in the United States. The initiative, which began on July 4, aims to provide minors with access to the stock market to foster long-term wealth. The U.S. Treasury Department recently completed an automatic creation of over 60 million accounts, while parents have opened roughly 10 million accounts manually.
Total funds in the accounts exceed $4.5 billion, consisting of $2.6 billion in donations, $1.3 billion from the Treasury, and over $600 million from family and friends. Children born between 2025 and 2028 are eligible for a $1,000 seed capital deposit from the government. Additionally, philanthropists Michael and Susan Dell have committed $6.25 billion to provide $250 to 25 million children.
More than 70 companies, including Intel, Nvidia, and Uber, have pledged contributions for employees' children. Families can contribute up to $5,000 annually per child, with employers able to contribute up to $2,500 of that total. To ensure long-term growth, funds must be invested in low-cost index funds with a maximum commission of 0.10%. The capital is intended to remain untouched until the child reaches age 18, subject to standard tax rules and penalties for early withdrawal.
