U.S. federal debt surpasses $40 trillion milestone

The United States' gross federal debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, reaching $40.03 trillion as of August 20, 2026, according to Treasury Department data. Of this total, $32.28 trillion is held by the public, while $7.75 trillion consists of intra-governmental obligations.

President Donald Trump addressed the debt milestone while departing for South Carolina, asserting that unprecedented economic growth will allow the nation to manage the debt and rising interest rates with ease. He noted that while debt has been a long-standing issue, the current economic expansion provides a solution.

Regarding trade and domestic policy, Trump stated that an agreement with Canada is largely finalized and that the administration is beginning work on a new trade deal with Mexico. He also expressed a desire to lower beef prices through imports of high-quality beef. Additionally, Trump clarified that he did not personally direct Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to increase long-term bond buyback operations, though he praised Bessent's expertise in managing bonds and interest rates.
