Trump administration acquires $27.7 billion in private company stakes

The Trump administration has acquired ownership stakes in 31 private companies, totaling approximately $27.7 billion, across the technology, energy, defense, and mining sectors. This initiative, which includes 39 total stakes or ownership rights since January 2025, represents a departure from traditional Republican free-market principles. Key moves include a “golden share” in U.S. Steel and a 10 percent stake in Intel.

Unlike previous federal interventions during financial crises or wars, these investments aim to secure domestic semiconductor production and critical mineral supply chains. However, the strategy has faced legal scrutiny; Intel shareholders have filed a lawsuit alleging that the CHIPS Act does not explicitly authorize the government to purchase equity in publicly traded companies.

The administration's actions have prompted interest from Democratic leaders. California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a national public equity fund for artificial intelligence, while Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation seeking 50 percent public ownership in major AI firms. Analysts suggest these precedents may influence how future administrations approach climate, labor, and technology policies.
