Trump issues executive orders to support U.S. ranchers and beef markets

President Donald Trump has issued two executive orders aimed at supporting American ranchers and addressing beef market competition. One order, ‘Supporting America’s Ranchers,’ directs federal agencies to review regulations, evaluate the delisting of gray and Mexican wolves under the Endangered Species Act, and review beef labeling requirements. The second order, ‘Promoting Fair Competition in Livestock Markets,’ targets market consolidation by the ‘Big 4’ meat packers—JBS, Tyson Foods, Cargill, and National Beef—and mandates stricter enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act.

To lower consumer prices, the administration has also moved to increase foreign beef imports, allowing up to 300,000 metric tons of lean beef trimmings to enter the U.S. This measure has met significant backlash from domestic cattle producers and agricultural groups in states like Alabama and Florida. Critics argue that increased imports may undermine the domestic supply chain and discourage ranchers from retaining heifers to rebuild the national cattle herd.

While the administration expects these imports to increase U.S. beef supplies by approximately 10% and provide economic relief to consumers, industry leaders warn that the benefits may not reach grocery stores and could instead damage the long-term viability of American ranching.
