Trump administration blocks Nevada national park funding

The Trump administration has blocked millions of dollars in federal funding for various projects within Nevada’s national parks. In August, the U.S. Department of the Interior canceled eight contracts and downgraded four additional projects to “low priority status,” placing at least $4.4 million in previously secured funding on hold.

These canceled agreements would have funded specialized environmental and cultural resource work in areas including the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and the Mojave Desert. The projects were intended to support wildlife monitoring, long-term weather stations, road mapping, and cultural resource preservation.

According to the Center for Western Priorities, the administration’s actions nationally involved halting more than 130 agreements and downgrading roughly 1,500 projects, totaling nearly $26 million in funding that had already been obtained through congressional appropriations. In Nevada, the Desert Research Institute faced the largest single-project loss, losing approximately $3.4 million intended for mapping unapproved roads and surveying cultural resources in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
