Trump administration challenges court rulings on media access and activist detention
The Trump administration is pursuing legal actions to expand executive authority regarding immigration enforcement and media access. In one case, the U.S. Department of Justice has petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that led to the release of Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown University scholar and Indian citizen. Suri was detained in March 2025 as part of a campaign targeting pro-Palestinian activists on university campuses. A federal judge previously ordered his release, citing potential violations of his First Amendment rights to free speech and due process.
Simultaneously, the administration is defending efforts to restrict White House access for specific media outlets, including CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. In court filings, the Department of Justice argued that White House access is a “privilege, not a right” and that the President has the authority to control private areas of the White House to protect national security. The administration claims that reporting by these outlets regarding the war in Iran and the construction of Trump's hall poses security risks. This legal battle is viewed as a significant test of First Amendment protections for the press.
