Trump administration clashes with effective altruism movement

The Trump administration has criticized the effective altruism movement, labeling the doctrine a “catastrophic and sectarian farce” that threatens United States leadership in competition with China.

Effective altruism is a quantitative philosophical movement originating from British academia, specifically associated with University of Oxford scholars such as William MacAskill and the ideas of Peter Singer. The movement seeks to maximize global positive impact through scientific evidence and resource optimization, often prioritizing large-scale issues like pandemic prevention and existential risks to humanity, a concept known as “longtermism.”

The movement gained significant traction in Silicon Valley, attracting major tech figures including Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and Skype co-developer Jaan Tallinn. It has been a primary financier for research into artificial intelligence safety. However, the movement's reputation has faced challenges following the collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency platform and the subsequent conviction of its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried.
