Trump administration considers lifting sanctions on Russian Direct Investment Fund

The Trump administration is evaluating a request to lift sanctions on the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), a major state-owned investment vehicle. According to reports from The New York Times, the decision is being considered as part of broader efforts to improve bilateral relations between the United States and Russia and to assist in ending the war in Ukraine.

The RDIF has reportedly offered to act as a key intermediary for the supply of Russian diesel fuel to the United States. This follows President Trump’s announcement that Russia has agreed to supply millions of tons of diesel to both American and global markets. A Maltese-flagged tanker carrying 40,000 metric tons of Russian diesel is expected to arrive in the U.S. in early November.

Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the RDIF, has been described by an American official as a “useful envoy” for U.S. negotiators. While the administration is reviewing the request through established procedures, critics express concern that providing economic benefits to Moscow may not guarantee significant concessions regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Additionally, Washington may be considering potential deals involving the Russian chemical fertilizer industry.
