Trump administration considers maritime deportation plan

The Trump administration is evaluating a proposal to deport migrants to countries including Venezuela, El Salvador, and Honduras using maritime vessels. This preliminary plan involves multi-day sea voyages and could cost millions of dollars per trip, significantly more than current aerial deportation methods. Officials are reportedly exploring vessel options, such as the 500-foot Golden Bear training ship, and contacting European shipping companies. Implementing this strategy could allow the administration to shift deportation costs from the Department of Homeland Security to the Department of Defense.

Separately, under a migration agreement signed in January 2025 between the United States and Venezuela, 378 Venezuelan migrants were repatriated via two flights on October 7. Due to earthquake damage in the La Guaira region, the migrants landed in Barcelona, Anzoátegui, rather than the usual Simón Bolívar Airport in Maiquetía.
