Trump administration continues detaining pregnant migrant minors in South Texas

An investigation by The California Newsroom and The Texas Newsroom has found that the Trump administration continues to detain pregnant migrant youth in South Texas, a region where a lack of specialized obstetric care poses potential life-threatening risks.

Despite warnings from members of Congress and current and former government officials, the practice persists. Government records indicate that within the first ten months of this policy, four of the 21 pregnant girls placed in the region required out-of-state transfers to receive specialized medical care, including at least one abortion that was unavailable in Texas.

The investigation, which previously highlighted the detention of unaccompanied minors as young as 13 at a shelter near the Mexico border, noted that many of these pregnancies resulted from rape. While health experts have raised concerns regarding the high-risk nature of adolescent pregnancies and the local lack of medical resources, the administration has denied the existence of such a policy, stating that the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) ensures children have access to necessary care.
