Trump administration efforts to combat US opioid crisis face expert debate

Experts are divided on the effectiveness of the Trump administration’s strategies to combat the United States' opioid crisis. While the administration has implemented significant measures to crack down on illicit drug use, analysts suggest further steps, such as increasing access to evidence-based treatment and harm reduction, may be necessary.

Key actions taken by the administration include designating fentanyl-trafficking organizations as foreign terrorist organizations and utilizing Treasury authorities to target financial institutions involved in laundering opioid profits. Additionally, the HALT Fentanyl Act, signed into law in July 2025, permanently classified fentanyl-related substances as a Schedule I drug.

Data shows that opioid-related overdose deaths decreased from an estimated 55,296 in 2024 to 44,564 in 2025, alongside a substantial decline in fentanyl-associated mortality. However, medical experts note that mortality rates began declining after a 2022 peak and fell sharply in 2024, prior to the current administration taking office, complicating claims of sole authorship for the trend.
