Advisory Council ends historic review for Trump's Triumphal Arch

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) has terminated its required consultation process regarding the impact of President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot 'Triumphal Arch' near Arlington National Cemetery. The decision effectively bypasses a key component of federal historical preservation law, known as a Section 106 review, which typically requires agreement or significant input from local and state officials.

The National Park Service has acknowledged that the structure would have 'adverse effects' on the surrounding historic landscape. Virginia and D.C. officials have expressed strong opposition, arguing the arch would 'mar' the area and potentially intrude upon the privacy of military funeral ceremonies at the adjacent cemetery.

Beyond its commemorative purpose, the administration has indicated the arch will serve as a military complex, designed to house ammunition and provide platforms for drones and snipers. The project, estimated at $250 million, is moving toward final approval. The ACHP will submit its final recommendations to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum by October 7, with a potential final vote by the National Capital Planning Commission in early November.
