Trump announces energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, claiming both parties have agreed to the arrangement. Trump stated that the agreement aims to prevent attacks on Russian oil refineries, which he argued cause global energy prices to rise.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected the announcement, stating that the ceasefire regarding attacks on Russian oil refineries has been canceled. Zelensky described the underlying deal as “absolutely horrible... unfair and dishonest,” accusing Vladimir Putin of playing games with the U.S. administration.

In tandem with the ceasefire announcement, the Trump administration has suspended sanctions related to Russian fossil fuel sales. This move includes allowing the export of Russian diesel to global markets, a decision that has drawn criticism from European allies and Ukrainian leadership for potentially funding the Russian war effort.

Relations between Washington and Kyiv remain strained due to these energy policies, as well as reported restrictions on the Starlink satellite internet service used by the Ukrainian military.
