Trump administration faces internal struggles in noncitizen voting probe

The Trump administration’s initiative to prosecute noncitizen voting has faced significant internal challenges. According to emails reviewed by ProPublica, federal efforts to find criminal cases supporting claims of widespread illegal voting by noncitizens have proven difficult to execute.

In Minnesota, Joe Teirab, the second-in-command at the U.S. attorney’s office, reported that the process was ‘dysfunctional.’ After subpoenaing records for approximately 130 individuals, his staff found only one case suitable for prosecution referral. Teirab described the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) task force as ‘disjointed and disorganized,’ noting that agents demonstrated a ‘complete lack of understanding’ of illegal voting investigations while overwhelming local election offices with demands for data.

Despite high-priority directives from Justice Department appointee Nick Davis, the administration’s push to substantiate claims that the American election system is vulnerable has struggled to produce substantive criminal results.
