Judge blocks Trump administration's White House press ban
A federal judge has extended a preliminary injunction that prevents the Trump administration from enforcing a ban on journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico at the White House. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that the administration's decision to revoke the press credentials of more than 70 journalists likely violated First Amendment free speech protections and Fifth Amendment due process rights.
In his 26-page decision, Judge Kelly found that the administration likely discriminated against the news organizations based on their viewpoints. He noted that President Trump's public comments suggested the ban was intended to pressure the outlets to report more favorably on him, rather than being a response to legitimate national security concerns. The judge stated there was virtually no evidence in the record to support the Department of Justice's claim that the revocation was motivated by national security.
The ruling ensures that reporters from the three outlets maintain access to the White House grounds while the broader legal challenge proceeds. However, the order does not mandate access to specific restricted areas such as the Oval Office or Air Force One.
