White House construction projects could exceed $900 million
The Trump administration is planning extensive construction and modernization projects on the White House grounds that could cost upwards of $900 million. According to reports citing confidential documents, the project includes the construction of a large new ballroom in place of the demolished East Wing, a new helipad, a visitor screening center, and a redesign of the West Wing and Lafayette Square.
Rather than seeking direct funding from Congress, the administration has reportedly transferred funds from other federal agencies into a specialized White House maintenance account. Approximately $500 million of the total has been sourced from the Secret Service and the White House Military Office, while roughly $305 million has come from private donors. An additional $70 million remains unaccounted for in some reports.
The administration maintains that these renovations are essential for the security of the president and the White House infrastructure. However, the project has faced significant legal and political scrutiny. A federal appeals court recently ordered a pause on the ballroom construction, ruling that the administration must obtain formal legislative approval to proceed. The administration has indicated plans to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court.
