Trump administration faces scrutiny over visa use and financial oversight
The Trump administration is facing criticism for utilizing executive powers to influence foreign actors and weaken domestic financial oversight. Reports indicate the administration has been using visa revocations as a tool to target foreign journalists, judges, and lawmakers who are critical of the U.S. or its allies, while simultaneously reinstating visas for political allies. The State Department maintains that officials have broad discretionary authority to cancel visas as needed.
Simultaneously, the Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has announced changes that roll back requirements for businesses formed in the United States to disclose their actual owners. The move includes the destruction of much of the data previously gathered on shell companies. While Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the decision as a victory for small businesses, critics and former prosecutors argue the policy creates loopholes for money laundering, tax evasion, and large-scale financial fraud.
