Trump administration fires DOJ prosecutor from Adani case

The Trump administration has fired a federal prosecutor from the Justice Department’s Fraud Section who had worked on the criminal case against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani. The prosecutor was one of two attorneys who requested to withdraw from the case shortly after leadership moved to dismiss the charges in May.

Adani was indicted in 2024 on allegations involving a scheme to pay more than $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar energy contracts, while also misleading U.S. investors. Adani has denied all wrongdoing. Although U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis allowed the charges against Adani to be dismissed, he characterized the Justice Department’s handling of the matter as “highly unusual.”

The dismissal followed reports of Adani pledging a $10 billion investment in the United States. While the defense suggested a connection between the investment and the dismissal, U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella stated that such a proposal had been “categorically rejected.” The prosecutor was reportedly terminated approximately one month after the case was dropped.
