Trump administration implements shifts in immigration and deportation policies
The Trump administration is implementing significant changes to immigration enforcement and humanitarian protections. According to Department of Homeland Security data, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested nearly 51,000 undocumented individuals in August 2026, marking a record monthly high. Since January 2025, the administration reports that 3 million undocumented individuals have left the country, consisting of 985,000 removals and 2.2 million self-deportations.
While the administration has stripped humanitarian protections from several nations—including Venezuela, Haiti, Afghanistan, Syria, and South Sudan—officials appear to be softening its approach ahead of the November midterm elections. The Department of Homeland Security is expected to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 100,000 Ukrainians for an additional six months. Legal immigration levels have also reportedly been reduced by approximately half since the start of the term.
