Trump administration proposes detention facility for 3,000 migrant children

The Trump administration is proposing the creation of massive ‘emergency influx facility’ campuses designed to detain up to 3,000 unaccompanied migrant children. These children are those who have arrived in the United States without a parent or guardian.

According to officials from the Administration for Children and Families, the project aims to provide speed in responding to surges at the U.S.-Mexico border. The proposed facilities would be staffed by physicians, teachers, and humanitarian care providers. Specifications for the facilities include an eight-foot perimeter fence and housing arrangements where up to eight children share a single room, toilet, shower, and sink. Recreation areas are not strictly required to be outdoors.

While a specific location has not been determined, the administration is seeking contractors and service providers, with the goal of awarding contracts by the end of the year. The facilities must meet specific proximity requirements, including being within 30 miles of a hospital and 30 miles of pediatric care, dental, and behavioral health services. Additionally, they must be within 60 miles of an airport. The plan also includes requirements for quarantine areas based on the total bed capacity of each facility.
