Trump administration proposes national security tariffs on brass instruments

The Trump administration is considering adding wood-brass instruments—including tubas, trombones, trumpets, and French horns—to a list of imports subject to Section 232 national security tariffs. If enacted, these instruments and their components would face a 25 percent tariff.

The Commerce Department stated that the move is intended to protect domestic production of critical metals like copper, aluminum, and steel. Officials argue that reliance on imported metals could weaken the demand for American-made materials, potentially leaving the country short of essential supplies during a national emergency.

Music industry groups and educators have expressed concern that the policy will increase costs for musicians and students. The National Association of Music cited a study indicating that tariffs contributed to a 27 percent drop in wind instrument imports in 2025. NAMM CEO John Mlynczak noted that nearly half of American students learn music through affordable, entry-level instruments in school programs, which could be impacted by rising prices. The government is currently seeking public input on the proposal through August 27.
