Trump approves plan to exchange Russian prisoner release for sanctions relief
President Donald Trump has reportedly approved an initiative proposed by his Eastern Europe envoy, John Coale, to exchange the release of Russian political prisoners for the easing of economic sanctions against Moscow. The plan, which is in its early stages, aims to break the diplomatic deadlock and reintegrate Russia into the global economy.
If implemented, the deal could facilitate lucrative U.S. trade in Russian commodities, including oil, diesel, and rare earth minerals. Additionally, the humanitarian aspect of releasing prisoners could support Trump’s pursuit of a Nobel Peace Prize. Coale previously utilized a similar strategy in Belarus to secure the release of approximately 500 prisoners in exchange for sanctions relief.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly condemned the plan, arguing that providing Russia with economic resources through trade will only prolong the war. International allies and political hawks have also expressed concerns that such a deal could undermine global isolation efforts and provide the Kremlin with funds to continue military operations.
