Trump administration pushes to return education control to states

The Trump administration is renewing efforts to transfer control of education from the federal government back to individual states. Citing $3 trillion in taxpayer investment since the U.S. Department of Education was established in 1980, officials pointed to declining national proficiency scores as justification for the shift.

A department spokesperson noted that only three in ten students are currently proficient in reading and math. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has previously pledged to dismantle the federal agency, aiming to empower local leaders and parents while removing ideology from higher education.
