Trump administration redirects $52 million in military aid to Latin America

The Trump administration has redirected $52 million in U.S. military aid from Europe and the Middle East to Latin American governments, bypassing a legislative freeze attempted by Democratic leaders in Congress.

The funds, which were originally earmarked for Slovakia, North Macedonia, Tunisia, and Iraq, will now be distributed to Panama, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. The State Department indicated the reallocation aims to combat narcoterrorism in the region, secure the Panama Canal, and counter the strategic influence of China in the Western Hemisphere.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Gregory Meeks have formally protested the move, characterizing it as a violation of statutory requirements. They argued that the funds were specifically approved to support European allies following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and that the executive branch does not have unlimited discretionary power to redirect such resources to unrelated political priorities.
