JD Vance announces removal of 750,000 ACA enrollees over suspected fraud
Vice President JD Vance and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz announced that the Trump administration is removing approximately 750,000 to 760,000 people from Affordable Care Act coverage. The administration cited suspected fraud, characterizing the enrollees as 'phantom patients' who are either ineligible, unaware of their coverage, or non-existent.
Oz stated that the decision is based on the fact that many of these individuals have never filed a medical claim. The administration estimates this move will save taxpayers approximately $2.2 billion. While the Paragon Health Institute suggests there may be over 6 million improper enrollments, health policy experts from KFF have cautioned that a lack of healthcare utilization does not inherently prove fraudulent enrollment, noting that younger, healthier individuals often maintain insurance without using it.
Advocacy groups have called for increased transparency regarding the methods used to identify those losing their coverage.
