Trump administration bars Medicaid and CHIP funding for minor gender transitions

The Trump administration has announced a new rule that will prohibit federal Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) funds from covering gender transition procedures for minors. The rule, set to take effect on October 13, specifically targets puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender-related surgeries for individuals under the age of 18.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Vice President JD Vance have also initiated investigations into medical providers. Following an HHS report titled ‘Wolves in White Coats,’ which alleges that hospitals have billed nearly $120 million for these procedures since 2019, Kennedy has referred over 200 medical entities to the HHS Inspector General. Additionally, Vance has called for a Department of Justice investigation into potential fraudulent billing practices used to secure insurance coverage for these interventions.

While federal funding for these specific medical services will be restricted, the administration noted that mental health services remain covered under Medicaid. Furthermore, the rule does not prevent individual states from choosing to fund such care using their own resources.
