Trump administration rolls back US fuel economy standards
The Trump administration has finalized new fuel economy standards, significantly rolling back policies established during the Biden administration. The new rules aim to reduce the pressure on automakers to produce electric vehicles and instead focus on traditional internal combustion engines.
Under the new guidelines, the projected fleet-wide fuel efficiency requirement for model year 2031 has been lowered to 34.9 miles per gallon, down from the previous target of 50.4 miles per gallon. Additionally, the regulation eliminates the inter-manufacturer credit trading system starting in model year 2028, which previously allowed companies to purchase compliance credits from cleaner manufacturers.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the changes are intended to make vehicles more affordable and support American manufacturing. The Department of Transportation projects the new rules will reduce the average price of a new vehicle by $1,300 and save Americans $138 billion over a five-year period. However, critics and environmental groups warn that the rollback could lead to increased CO2 emissions and higher long-term fuel costs for consumers.
