National Guard Secures $292 Million Housing Contract for DC Troops
The U.S. National Guard Bureau, the District of Columbia National Guard and the General Services Administration awarded a $292 million contract to Placemakr to build up to 2,000 apartment‑style lodging units for National Guard personnel deployed in Washington, D.C. Officials described the deal as the largest interagency lodging acquisition in National Guard history and said it will cut costs by roughly half compared with short‑term hotel rates.
The contract supports President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14252, titled “Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful,” which authorizes the deployment of about 5,150 troops to the capital. Monica Williams, the National Guard Bureau’s executive director of acquisitions, said the agreement will provide stable, secure housing while achieving significant taxpayer savings. Gen. Steve Nordhaus, chief of the National Guard Bureau, noted the deployment has saved 235 lives, delivered 530 medical assists and reunited children with their families 27 times.
The housing solution is intended to replace scattered hotel accommodations, improve readiness and reduce government spending on lodging.
