Trump administration sued over migrant children's asylum process

A coalition of six legal service providers has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging the expedited immigration and asylum processes for unaccompanied migrant children. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern Division of Maryland, argues that current policies function as a “deportation assembly line” that deprives minors of their legal rights.

The plaintiffs contend that the administration has implemented measures that obstruct fair evaluations, such as requiring asylum applications within weeks of arrival and providing as little as 24 hours' notice for rescheduled interviews. The legal action follows the administration's decision this summer to end a long-standing contract for legal services, leaving many children to navigate complex proceedings without counsel.

The lawsuit covers both children residing with family in the U.S. and those held in shelters operated by the Office of Refugee Resettlement under the Department of Health and Human Services. Reports indicate that children as young as two are appearing in immigration courts nationwide, often without legal representation.
