Trump administration targets sanctuary jurisdictions with potential funding cuts

The Trump administration is exploring methods to compel sanctuary states and cities to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, including the potential withholding of federal funds. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that the administration is considering cutting funding to jurisdictions that refuse to assist with immigration enforcement, specifically questioning why sanctuary cities should receive federal money for services like international airports while resisting immigration policies.

Simultaneously, a Department of Justice legal opinion has expanded reporting requirements for states participating in federal welfare programs. Under the new interpretation, states receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) must ensure all state agencies report individuals known to be unlawfully present in the United States to the Department of Homeland Security.

Former DHS Chief of Staff Miles Taylor has criticized this move, characterizing it as using welfare funding as leverage to support a mass deportation campaign. While the Department of Justice maintains that the policy restores the original intent of 1996 welfare reform, officials have confirmed that non-compliance could result in the loss of program funding.
