Trump administration terminates TPS for 340,000 Haitians

The Trump administration has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 340,000 Haitians. As part of a voluntary return program, individuals are being offered $2,600 and free airfare to return to their homeland.

Beyond Haiti, the administration is seeking to return foreign nationals from several other countries previously granted TPS, including Afghanistan, Somalia, Cameroon, Nepal, Venezuela, Honduras, Nicaragua, Syria, South Sudan, Myanmar, Yemen, and Ethiopia. There are nearly 1.3 million individuals living in the U.S. under TPS as of last year.

A Supreme Court ruling in June affirmed the president's authority to terminate TPS for foreign nationals. However, legal challenges have emerged, such as a judicial block in Boston regarding the attempted return of 1,100 Somalis.
