Trump administration threatens Smithsonian support

The Trump administration has escalated pressure on the Smithsonian Institution, threatening to withdraw executive-agency support unless there is a change in leadership. In an August 28 letter addressed to the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley stated that government agencies may cease “loaning artifacts for exhibits, enabling procurement processes and making discretionary grants.”

The administration cites a White House report alleging that the institution is promoting “extreme political activism” at the National Museum of American History. Officials also claimed to have uncovered evidence that the Smithsonian’s “institutional culture may have resulted in significant violations of Federal antidiscrimination law,” though no specific examples were provided.

While the Smithsonian is a public-private trust rather than an executive agency, the federal government provides approximately two-thirds of its budget. The letter serves as a formal escalation of a months-long campaign to address what President Trump has characterized as “woke” ideology and a rewriting of American history within the museum complex. As of early September, no specific loans, contracts, or grants have been officially canceled, and the institution’s congressional appropriations remain intact.
