Trump administration to begin excavation for 250-foot Washington arch
The Trump administration has announced that excavation work for a proposed 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery will begin within the next two weeks. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum described the project, intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, as a major piece of American architecture that will honor the history of the cemetery.
The project faces significant legal and regulatory challenges. A group of military veterans and an architectural historian have filed a lawsuit to halt construction, arguing the structure lacks proper congressional authorization and would disrupt historic sightlines between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. In response to these challenges, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered the administration to provide 48 hours' notice before any activity at the site, excluding archaeological work.
While the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts has approved the design, the National Capital Planning Commission has not yet granted final approval. The administration maintains that the work beginning shortly consists of archaeological test pits to assess for cultural materials rather than full-scale construction. Critics have characterized the monument as a vanity project that violates local height restrictions and threatens the historic character of the nation's capital.
