Trump administration unveils America First Seafood Strategy

The Trump administration has launched the ‘America First Seafood Strategy,’ a coordinated federal plan designed to bolster the domestic commercial fishing industry and modernize maritime infrastructure. The initiative aims to increase American seafood production, expand processing capacity, and improve market access for domestic harvesters while combating unfair foreign competition.

Key components of the strategy include the introduction of a voluntary ‘U.S. Caught Seafood’ label, proposed by the FDA, to help consumers distinguish domestic products from imports. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is making at least $5 billion available through the Strengthening Processing for U.S. Ranchers (SPUR) Guaranteed Loan Program. These funds are intended to help the industry expand, improve, and diversify the processing of meat, poultry, and seafood.

The strategy also introduces Seafood.gov, a centralized digital portal for fishermen and consumers. Federal agencies, including NOAA and the Department of Commerce, will work to streamline permitting, reduce regulatory costs, and rebuild shoreside infrastructure such as shipyards, docks, and cold storage facilities. The administration noted that approximately 80% of seafood consumed in the U.S. was imported in 2023.
