Trump administration uses denaturalization against political opponents
The Trump administration has increased its use of denaturalization proceedings, a tactic historically used by authoritarian regimes to silence critics. In May and early June, the federal government initiated proceedings to revoke the citizenship of 33 individuals, a figure exceeding any single year since at least 2008.
Federal agents recently searched the Washington home of Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) as part of an investigation into her citizenship. Omar, a Somali immigrant and frequent critic of the president, has been a target of public vilification by Trump, who has previously called for her deportation.
