Trump administration’s Freedom 250 fundraising scheme under congressional scrutiny

House Democrats released a report alleging that donors were misled to contribute to the White House‑backed Freedom 250 organization instead of the bipartisan America250 entity created by Congress for the nation’s semiquincentennial. Fundraisers reportedly gave donors alternate payment instructions, raising fraud concerns.

Freedom 250, a public‑private partnership operating under the National Park Foundation, received at least $68.3 million in taxpayer funds transferred by the Department of the Interior and has solicited corporate donations from firms such as Palantir, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and UnitedHealth Group. Watchdog groups say the partnership exploits the charity status of the National Park Foundation, allowing corporate sponsors with government contracts to influence events and receive VIP access.

The congressional report described Freedom 250 as a “hotbed of corruption and self‑enrichment,” alleging the administration pressured donors to give to Freedom 250, diverted intended America250 contributions, and used confusing branding to steer money toward the president’s preferred entity.
