Trump administration announces beef import plan and Ranchers First Initiative
The Trump administration has announced a series of agricultural policies aimed at lowering beef prices and supporting domestic producers. A key component is an executive proclamation allowing 300,000 metric tons of imported beef to enter the United States duty-free for 90 days, starting September 1. These imports are intended to be sold at 25 percent below current market prices.
However, the plan has faced significant criticism from American ranchers and Republican lawmakers. Critics, including Senator Roger Marshall and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, argue that the influx of cheap foreign meat could undercut domestic markets and discourage ranchers from rebuilding the U.S. cattle herd, which is currently at a 75-year low. Some economists suggest the impact on consumer prices may be limited, as the imports consist primarily of beef trimmings and represent only about 2 percent of domestic consumption.
In response to concerns regarding meatpacking monopolies, President Trump has expressed intentions to allow ranchers to slaughter and process their own meat. Agriculture Secretary Brooke L. Rollins also announced the ‘Ranchers First Initiative,’ a package designed to reduce regulatory burdens, provide risk management tools, and rebuild the American beef industry.
