Trump and GOP allies mobilize election monitors for November

Donald Trump and Republican allies are preparing an extensive network of party and federal election monitors for the upcoming November election. The Justice Department plans to deploy more than 1,000 monitors on Election Day, a move Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon described as the “biggest DOJ election observer effort in history.” This deployment significantly exceeds the number of monitors used by the Biden administration in 2024.

In addition to federal efforts, the Republican National Committee (RNC) is training “special monitors” to inspect voting machines. These monitors are instructed to record serial numbers, inspect security seals, and photograph results tapes, reporting any perceived discrepancies to an RNC legal hotline. This initiative follows claims from Trump and his allies regarding the vulnerability of voting machines to fraud.

While there is currently no evidence that these monitoring efforts will prevent voting or disrupt polling places, previous primary deployments have seen mixed reports. In Wyoming, federal observers were accused of disruptive behavior by Republican officials, and records indicate some monitors from previous cycles were involved in challenging election results or legal issues regarding unauthorized website access.
