DPAA Director Kelly McKeague stated that the agency is prepared to cooperate with North Korea to recover the remains of U.S. service members killed or captured during the Korean War. McKeague proposed resuming joint field missions similar to those conducted between 1996 and 2005, which successfully identified 153 service members through 37 operations.

The proposed plan involves deploying two excavation teams to Unsan and Jangjin for 45-day operations, four times per year. This initiative is viewed as a humanitarian effort that could serve as a diplomatic channel for communication and cooperation between the two nations. An estimated 5,300 U.S. service members' remains are believed to still be located in North Korea.
