Trump and Macron present opposing global visions at UN

During the United Nations General Assembly, President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron presented diverging visions for global order.

Addressing the conflict with Iran, Trump weighed the possibility of negotiating a deal to allow the country to rebuild or the alternative to “annihilate the Islamic Republic” to prevent future aggression. He indicated a preference for making a decision regarding Iran following the American midterm elections. Trump also commented on the war in Ukraine, predicting a negotiated end to the conflict despite the ongoing high casualty rates.

In contrast, Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech defending multilateralism and the rules-based international order. He criticized the rise of an “era of barbaric acts” and rejected the notion that “might is right.” Macron specifically challenged the use of double standards in international relations, arguing that sovereignty and the right to peace and security must be applied equally across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, rather than being subject to the “law of the jungle.”
